A-Z Garden Tips: Organizing Oregano and Other Garden Herbs

Fresh garden herbs like oregano, basil, thyme, and parsley are great for salads and cooking, especially when regional growing seasons are in full swing.

However, lots of recipes call for dried herbs. And in the winter months, those garden delights can be super handy, as well as thrifty, to have around.

Here’s how I save herbs from my own garden.

As soon as I snip some fresh herbs, I place them in brown paper lunch bags. I use a permanent marker to label the bags – one for each type of spice herb. Then I fold the top of each bag closed and set it in the garden shed.

Once the herbs are completely dry, I transfer them to labeled glass jars. Any baby food jars, jelly jars, and empty spice jars work handily. The dried herbs can then go into the spice cupboard - or be set aside for great garden gifts.

Home-grown oregano and other spices are super in spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, lasagna, or other savory recipes.
