Best bargains: DIY personalized gift ideas for birthdays and holidays

Looking for creative, but not costly, personalized gift ideas for special people?

Why not choose a favorite poem, quotation, or Scripture verse and put it on a do-it-yourself gift?

Here are a few personalized DIY gift possibilities:

  • Bible memory cards – Print several favorite Scripture verses on heavy cardstock. Cut them into stacks, and tie them with string or ribbon.
  • Monogrammed note cards – Create personalized stationary, either folded notes or full sheets. Place the recipient’s initials or name on the papers. Or type a suitable saying. Print the papers out, and parcel them with matching envelopes.
  • Poetry magnet – Pick a poem, and print it on sturdy paper. Cut it out, and glue a magnet on the back.
  • Quotation bookmark – Select a fitting quote. Print it on pretty paper. (Or print several to a sheet, and make a whole set of bookmarks.) Punch a hole at one end, and slip a piece of yarn through it.

These do-it-yourself personalized gifts are extra special and durable, if they are laminated. As a more economical option, you might cover each one neatly (on both sides) with clear wide packing tape.

Friday

5 reasons to celebrate February 7, even if it's frigid out

Brr. It is nasty cold outside again!

But I’m looking for reasons to celebrate the day. No, I’m not playing Pollyanna. I just realized the day may offer some extra bonuses, even if it is painfully cold for the umpteenth time in a row.

Maybe you feel the same way.

So here we go.

1. It’s Friday.

That means most of us are ready to enjoy a few days off.

It also means a big bunch of new movies hit cinemas tonight. Here are a few February 7 releases:

  • After the Dark
  • Cavemen
  • Demi-Soeur
  • A Fantastic Fear of Everything
  • A Field in England
  • Nurse 3D
  • Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage
  • Someone Marry Barry
  • The Last of the Unjust
  • The LEGO Movie
  • The Monuments Men
  • The Outsider
  • The Pretty One
  • Vampire Academy
  • Welcome to the Jungle

OK, I gotta admit it. I’m not familiar with many of these. Still, moviegoers seem to have a host of choices for this frosty February weekend, if they’re willing to fork over plenty of lettuce for admission.

Personally, I think I'll wait for Amazon Prime, Netflix, or cable – and grab my fuzzy slippers and TV remote tonight instead.

2. The Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies are televised tonight.

Yes, the actual competitions are already underway. We’re already seeing spangled skaters whirling across the ice and snowboarders executing daredevil moves in the winter sky over Sochi. But the Opening Ceremonies are scheduled for airing this evening.

Go, Team USA!

Here in Wisconsin, we will see them from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm on NBC. Sure, it’s a tape-delay program, and we’re already hearing hints. But it’s still gonna be something special to watch the world gathering for the Winter Games. And who doesn’t love to see that Parade of Nations, with top athletes from all over strolling proudly into the stadium, waving their flags?

3. February 7 is an actual holiday for some people.

  • Ballet Day
  • Bubblegum Day
  • Give Kids a Smile Day
  • National Fettucini Alfredo Day
  • Send a Card to a Friend Day
  • Wave All Your Fingers at Your Neighbor Day
  • and more.

It’s even National Wear Red Day for women’s cancer awareness. That sure made it easy to pick something out and get dressed this  morning.

4. Plenty of intriguing people celebrate birthdays on February 7.

Today is the birthday of lots of celebrities, such as Garth Brooks, Ashton Kutcher, Chris Rock, and James Spader.

And a bunch of historical figures were born on this date. How about John Deere, Frederick Douglass, Charles Dickens, Sir Thomas More, and Laura Ingalls Wilder?

Here’s an entire article, listing tons of February 7 Notable Birthdays.

Do you feel better yet? (Pass the cake, would you, please?)

5. Spring is actually coming.

Forget the groundhog. Spring is gonna arrive – at least, eventually.

Just this morning, I heard a bunch of birds, chirping up a storm outside my kitchen window. Yeah, they must be freezing their little feathers off. But maybe they’re onto something out there.

So, even though the weather outside is so frightfully frigid that it’s freezing up my wifi (Yes, the cable company actually admitted that.), I’m hunting for reasons to be happy. Who wants to play along?

Dunk this! It's Eat an Oreo Day!

Today is Eat an Oreo Day.

Who’d have thunk it? Go ahead. Dunk it.

It’s a foodie holiday, celebrated on June 19th. But who's gonna eat just one Oreo cookie? Is that even possible?

How do you eat your Oreos?

Do you twist and open a cookie first? What’s next? Do you eat the frosting right away, or leave it on the wafer?

And do you dunk your Oreos in milk? How about chocolate milk or strawberry-flavored milk?

What’s your favorite Oreo flavor?

Are you a traditionalist or an adventurous sampler, when it comes to Oreo cookies? And do you pick regular or double-stuffed oreos?

The widely touted newest Oreo filling flavor is watermelon. That doesn’t exactly rock my boat, but I’d bet plenty of folks will try this quirky one. Hey, it might be just right for the Fourth of July, when partygoers start spitting seeds before the fireworks.

Nabisco has tried dozens of varieties of Oreo sandwich cookies. Long-term and limited-release flavors have included:

  • banana split
  • berry burst
  • birthday (sparkled)
  • candy corn
  • chocolate
  • Christmas
  • cookies and cream
  • cool mint
  • creamsicle
  • DQ Blizzard
  • Easter
  • fudge
  • green tea
  • Halloween
  • ice cream
  • Neapolitan
  • peanut butter
  • peppermint
  • spring
  • strawberry cream
  • strawberry milkshake
  • sugar-free
  • vanilla
  • and more.

What’s next? Cheese Oreos?

There's even an Oreo breakfast cereal and Oreo Pop-Tarts.

Personally, I’d prefer an altogether different variety of Oreo. Can you guess what that is? Here’s my favorite Oreo idea of all.

Hey, Nabisco! Bring it on.

K is for Keeping Up with Birthdays for Kids and Adults

Birthdays creep up on us each year, particularly the milestones of our many social networking contacts, if we are active internet participants.

How can you keep up with all of these happy occasions?

Most social networking sites notify users of the birthdays of friends and contacts. That makes it pretty simple to tap out a few salutations and best wishes.

Some sites offer the option of sending real or virtual birthday gifts as well. But most of these cost money. In the very least, these choices tend to require the accumulation of online gaming points, share credits, or referrals.

Yes, there’s a much easier solution to fun online birthday salutations.

Sure, plenty of birthday graphics and meme images may be available. But plenty of these come with page marketing and affiliation hitches, if not potentially more sinister attachments. Why risk your computer system, identity security, or other valuables?

Here’s a super-simple way to send colorful and fun birthday greetings to online friends.

Stop in and see the Holidays Examiner – Madison and More page on Facebook. There, you can find hundreds of free birthday graphics. If you “like” the page, you can choose the greetings you like, and “share” them easily with your Facebook friends.

I created many of these images myself. Others are adapted from public domain or royalty-free artwork. So there’s not risk in using them.

Happy birthday, all around!

C is for Cookie Gifts

Who doesn’t love cookies?

Cookies make wonderful gifts for all sorts of folks – from new neighbors to piano teachers, and from favorite friends to first-time parents or in-a-pinch errand runners. A fresh-baked batch of delicious morsels offers a wonderful welcome, a terrific thank-you gesture, or a much-needed boost.

Baking enthusiasts may enjoy whipping up a few dozen cookies to share, arranging the goodies on a pretty plate or in a fancy cookie tin for presentation. Others may simply assemble the key ingredients and allow their recipients to finish the process.

Pick your favorite cookies: bars, cut-outs, dipped, drops, filled, sandwich, or whatever strikes your fancy. Make them chocolate, fruit, vanilla, whole grain, or any flavor you love. Pick a bunch for gifting, but be sure to save some for home!

As the famous Cookie Monster from “Sesame Street” sang, “C is for Cookie. That’s good enough for me.”
