MEMORIES - for the 2021 Holiday Photography Challenge (See sidebar for full list.).
Memories matter, especially when it comes to holiday traditions. One of my most special Christmas tree ornaments is a prime example.
This adorable scallop shell ornament is more than 100 years old. It’s a favorite.
My grandmother, who was born in 1899 and grew up on Cape Cod, picked this seashell up on a beach when she was a little girl. She painted it. Then she cut out the picture of the childlike angels with tiny manicure scissors and glued it to the inside of the shell. Finally, she découpaged the whole thing.
A grownup must have helped her to make the hole in the top of the shell, so the cord could be added for hanging her creation on a Christmas tree.
Why would I shell out for shiny new Christmas tree ornaments, when I can unwrap a treasured family keepsake like this one?
