What does your Santa look like?

SANTA - for the 2021 Holiday Photography Challenge (See sidebar for full list.).

As Christmas approaches, children write letters to Santa Claus, often listing their seasonal wishes. Families stand in line in shopping malls, parks, and other spots to visit with the jolly white-bearded man in the fuzzy red suit. It’s a popular photo op, right?

Kids of all ages (around the world) call him by many other names:

  • Agios Vasilios
  • Babbo Natale
  • Colacho
  • Ded Moroz
  • Dun Che Lao Ren
  • Father Christmas
  • Jolasveinar
  • Joulupukki
  • Julenissen
  • Kanakaloka
  • Kris Kringle
  • Noel Baba
  • Old Man Christmas
  • Papa Noel
  • Pelznickel
  • Pere Noel
  • Santa Korohsu
  • Sinterklaas
  • St. Nick / St. Nicholas
  • Weihnachtsmann

Maybe you can identify the countries in which each name is most often used to identify the famous Christmas figure.

Each culture’s description of him is different. His features and clothing and history and demeanor vary.

Plenty of people collect Christmas plates, nutcrackers, figurines, or ornaments featuring Santa Claus in various forms. Here are some of my favorites, as found on our own tree.
